Join the conversation this World Metrology Day!

World Metrology Day is celebrated by over 80 countries each year on 20 May – the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention back in 1875.  To this day, the agreement provides the basis for a single, coherent system of measurements that are traceable to the International System of Units.

World Metrology Day is a celebration of measurement and an opportunity to reflect on its importance to our daily lives.  The theme for World Metrology Day 2017 is: “Measurements for transport.”

This theme was chosen because transport plays such a key role in the modern world. We not only move ourselves, but also the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the goods we use and rely on and so on. Doing so safely, efficiently and with minimal environmental impact requires an astonishing range of measurements.

This year, the National Measurement Institute (NMI) is marking World Metrology Day by hosting an expert panel discussion - ‘In conversation’ on Monday 22 May 2017.

The discussions will focus on the role of measurement in supporting our transportation system. Measurement techniques used in the transport sector are dynamic and diverse, including measurements for speed regulation, navigation, the sale of fuel and maintenance of transport devices, to name a few.  The panel will also explore the ways in which accurate measurements can result in improved transport outcomes and how relevant experts can work together in this changing sector.

Facilitated by ABC award winning journalist Sophie Scott, the panelists include: Mr Nick Koukoulas, Chief Executive, Austroads; Mr Mark McKenzie, CEO, Australasian Convenience & Petroleum Marketers Association; and Dr Mark Ballico, Section Manager, Mechanical, Thermal and Optical Standards, National Measurement Institute Australia.

A light breakfast will be provided before the event. For catering purposes, please RSVP by Thursday, 18 May 2017.

Laboratory tours will be available immediately following In Conversation.

Attendance is free and open to the public, so please share the link below with friends or colleagues who may be interested.
