Australia-China Joint Research Centre in Future Dairy Manufacturing

China is an important market for the Australian dairy industry. There are opportunities for the industry to benefit from bi-directional knowledge exchange and access to expertise and to new and emerging markets for dairy products.

This Centre will provide the dairy industry with manufacturing process efficiencies and new high-value products, developing a strong link between Australia and the large distribution network in China.

Science and Research Priorities

This Centre aligns with the priority Food and seeks to investigate the practical challenges of:

  • knowledge of global and domestic demand, supply chains and the identification of country specific preferences for food Australia can produce; and
  • enhanced food production.

Economic, environmental and social benefits

  • More efficient dairy manufacturing processes to produce a range of quality products that command premium prices, with the potential to link with the largest supply and distribution chain in China for Australian dairy manufacturers.
  • More efficient energy usage for energy-intensive unit operations in dairy processing (spray drying, evaporators, concentrate heating, and others) and reduced waste generation from more efficient cleaning strategies and fewer incidents of fouling for unit operation.
  • Attracting, training, and retaining skilled professionals for the dairy industry to ensure an agile and innovative workforce, particularly in rural areas.
