Australia-China Joint Research Centre of Grains for Health

Grains are a valuable output of the Australia agricultural sector. This Centre will develop cereal grains with health-promoting properties to minimise non-communicable diseases and maximise nutritional value for the benefit of both Australian and Chinese populations.

This Centre will incorporate new and existing scientific knowledge into a translational pipeline that engages agricultural scientists, nutrition scientists, agribusiness specialists and nutrition policy makers to provide paths to dietary change with a high likelihood of improving the health outcomes of Australian and Chinese populations.

Science and Research Priorities

This Centre aligns with the priority Food and seeks to investigate the practical challenges of:

  • knowledge of global and domestic demand, supply chains and the identification of country specific preferences for food Australia can produce; and
  • enhanced food production.

Economic, environmental and social benefits

  • Development of grains and products that sustain healthy human development to reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases.
  • Identify and develop effective pathways to market for grain products that deliver health benefits.
